Top 5 Results: Matt Giraud Eliminated

This is a shocker: Adam Lambert, Kris Allen and Matt Giraud are in the Bottom 3. Well, it's not really shocking to see Matt there but this is the first time Adam and Kris are down there.

Even more shocking: Taylor Hicks!

Not so shocking news: Matt Giraud is going home tonight.

Adam Lambert: “Feeling Good”

Adam Lambert is a showman.

Or a showgirl :p

I don't think it was fair for one of the judges to compare him to Steve Tyler and David Bowie since he does a better job channeling Liberace more than those rock stars.

Danny Gokey: “Come Rain Come Shine”

Danny Gokey sings "Come Rain Come Shine" and Kara praises him for his swagger. It's still not enough for me. He's too clean, and he needs to rough it up even more.

Matt Giraud: “My Funny Valentine”

This was supposed to be the night for Matt Giraud to shine but he blew it. I am not getting Simon at all. It's like he lost his touch. And Paula's pre-written speeches are beginning to sound really annoying. Please give Paula her medication back!!!

Allison Iraheta: “Someone to Watch Over Me”

Birthday girl Allison Iraheta performs "Someone to Watch Over Me". I thought her cover of "I Can't Make You Love Me" was the absolute best her voice can go singing a ballad but this proved that the girl has far greater potential in the show. While almost everyone else is giving the same lame high note week after week in an attempt to grab everyone's attention and pretend that that is rock and roll, Allison is the only one to go low and tender, tugging your heart without being too gimmicky. It's a shame if she doesn't win this competition.

Kris Allen: “The Way You Look Tonight”

American Idol goes full swing with their tribute to the Rat Pack. The contestants were supposed to sing two songs tonight but because of having too many judges with redundant things to say, they cut it down to one and featured time with guest mentor Jamie Foxx since, as Kris Allen innocently pointed out, everyone in the Rat Pack is dead.

Kris Allen performed first and it was great.

Judges Use Save, Matt Giraud Avoids Elimination

Matt Giraud, American IdolMatt Giraud was supposed to go home but the judges decided to use the save on him tonight--the only one this season. He was in the Bottom 3 along with Anoop Desai and Lil Rounds. Next week, two will go home.

Does he deserve the save? With the exception of Lil Rounds, I think all of them do. But if Allison Iraheta gets booted off next week, then the use of this save will mean premature. I think it's Allison--who has been in the Bottom 3 twice--who deserves this save the most.

Lil Rounds: “The Rose”

Lil shouldn’t have lost her cool and answered back. And Paula should stop prodding the contestants to talk back against Simon.

Kris Allen: “Falling Slowly”

I agree with Randy on this one. It seemed like he was squeaking.

Danny Gokey: “Endless Love”

It was a bad start. I’m really bored with Danny Gokey now. It’s quite obvious that he starts low so that he can go his usual route in the end and attempt to soar. He’s reduced his singing to a formula.

Matt Giraud: “Have You Ever Loved a Woman”

The judges were right. You can’t put a lot of runs on a simple melody that works. Too bad, I thought there were moments though but the pitchiness in some parts did ruin it a little. Matt could be in trouble.

Adam Lambert: “Born to Be Wild”

Paula seemed to like this a lot: “You dared to dance the path of greatness.” Then they cut to Quentin Tarantino’s face:

Quentin Tarantino, American Idol

Anoop Desai: “Everything I Do, I Do it For You”

Wow, Anoop sure did pick up a lot from Quentin Tarantino’s instructions. I liked it, though I’m not sure he’s comfortable with the technique he was taught. But Anoop is a quick study, and because we love underdogs, it would be nice to see Anoop grow in strides and surprise us towards the end.

Allison Iraheta: “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing”

I thought this song was going to be a bad choice but it turned out really great. I don’t think Allison is getting the praise that she deserves. She’s been in the bottom 3 far more than she deserves and the pimping from the judges hasn’t really been as solid as that of the other contestants.

Scott MacIntyre Eliminated

Scott Macintyre, American Idol
Scott MacIntyre was eliminated tonight after sharing Bottom 3 duties with Lil Rounds and Anoop Desai. Did Scott deserve to be kicked out of the show? Let's just say he's lucky to have made it this far considering other contestants deserved the chance too. Was it the right bottom 3? I don't think Anoop deserved to be there but everyone seems to think Adam Lambert rocks so I guess anything goes.

Flo-rida and Kelly Pickler also performed tonight, as well as Frankie Avalon who sang a hit song of his from 1959--the same year Simon was born. I don't know why the show has to go out of their way to humor Simon. I think the contestants deserve more attention especially since Simon has really been inconsistent and unreliable this season.

As a group, the contestants performed “Can’t get you out of my head”, a song from the same year American Idol was conceived. It was hilarious if you're the type of person who hates Kylie Minogue. It's sacrilege if you love Kylie.

Adam Lambert: “Mad World”

I love this song. I love how Tears for Fears first delivered it to us, and I love how Gary Jules sang it.

There’s something unsettling about Adam Lambert’s persona: the way he oscillates between goth-like make-up one day and then into a polished look the next; how he screams, how he's more into his own confidence rather than the emotion of the song; how the arm gestures are rehearsed, how he looks at the camera, how he interacts with the crowd. It’s not rock, it’s broadway.

Matt Giraud: “Part Time Lover”

And Matt Giraud is back to being bluesy. I don’t think he’s been getting enough credit for his forays into pop rock. But if this means keeping him in the competition longer then let it be.

Allison Iraheta: “I Can’t Make You Love Me”

Oh my god, Allison couldn’t have chosen a better song. I waited for her to go tender, and she didn’t disappoint with this Bonnie Rait classic. I love Allison, VOTE FOR HER PLEASE!!!

I don't know why they keep comparing her to Kelly Clarkson. I love Kelly, but Allison is on a totally different league.

Scott MacIntyre: “The Search is Over”

Scott should stick to the piano and drop the electric guitar. He should also expect to be in the Bottom 3, and being dropped from the competition/

Anoop Desai: “True Colors”

Cindy Lauper and Phil Collins made this song a really memorable one and Anoop shines singing this one. I hated this song before, now I see the really tender emotions in it. Nice.

Lil Rounds: “What’s Love Got To Do With It”

Lil’s rendition of this Tina Turner signature song is rough on my ears. I don’t think she’s living up to her own potential.

Kris Allen: “All She Wants to Do is Dance”

Kris Allen sings from the mosh pit, and the groupie wannabes are kinda pretty and star struck watching him. The song is more upbeat and Kris does a nice job considering this was a horrible song to begin with. Simon hated it, and Randy agreed it was a self-indulgent arrangement.

Danny Gokey: “Stand By Me”

We’re down to 8 and Danny Gokey goes first on tonight’s American Idol with the theme: Songs From the Year You Were Born”. It’s a tired theme, and after Michael Jackson and Motown, this is just swell.

Danny Gokey has to show some subtlety. It’s manic how he sings. And it’s the same high-strung power display week after week after week.
